Brownlow Picture Gallery

Photographs of all Brownlow's and Brownlow historical places etc are welcome. When I first began doing Brownlow research in the early 1990's, I noticed strong physical similarities among Brownlow men from various branches. I finally got to the point where I would know, with some degree of certainty, if those branches represented in the photo's were related to my branch just by looking at the photographs.

Rivington, Lancashire England

Joyce pointed out this scene as a homeplace of a Brownlow who lived in this area in recorded history. I am unsure now of the name but want to say it was a George Brownlow. Joyce said that Brownlow's in this area were early Dissenter's and wore Quaker like clothing.

The second and third Rivington scenes were taken of the area in which land was granted to the individual who assisted King Aethelfirth in his fight against the Welsh. Brownlow is old English and is often translated "brown hill or brown meadow". (more under Oral History)

Stocks and Locks

The last photo is of the stocks (Rivington, Lancashire) used in punishing those who were found guilty of minor crimes. All I could think when I saw it was: "oh, my aching back". But I reckon it was a darn sight better than being drawn and quartered.
